Arts of Walking

When I'm looking for a pick-me-up, I often turn to the Some Landscapes blog, run by "Plinius" out of somewhere in Britain, which regularly explores the relations between art and landscape.  Plinius has a nice account of a retrospective by Richard Long, he of the "Line Made By Walking," one of the inspirations for Walkscapes everywhere.  He also references uptake of Long's work, including a film by Carey Young, Lines Made By Walking (2003), which transplants Long's notion into urban space.  To make sense of the citationality of these walks, I would have to turn to Tim Ingold's Lines: A Brief History (2007). I must have mentioned Ingold's work before: he is The anthropologist of walking.

Beyond the familiar

Recently, I’ve been thinking about the geography of familiarity. By that I mean something like a map of my habitat, the paths I travel most often, the places I feel most comfortable, the routines embedded in the rural and urban landscapes I know best. Most days, familiarity seems inherent in the world right around me, but every now and then I remember that it’s really an artifact of consciousness, a form of perception that can be lost, say, in someone with Alzheimer’s.

Biking and Walking

David Byrne--of Talking Heads fame--has a piece in today's NYT Book Review about Jeff Mapes' new book on bicycling--"active transportation," I guess is the preferred term among policy wonks. Turns out Byrne has ridden bicycles all over the world for the past 30 years, travelling with them on his current world tour. Mapes writes for The Oregonian, and the book, called Pedaling Revolution (multiple puns intended, no doubt) sings the praises of Portland and advocates more planning based around cycling.

Well and good--and the success of OSU's Bike to Work Week suggests that there are more cyclers in Central Ohio as well. (Congratulations, btw, to the University District's Catherine Girves and Pedal Instead, winner of an international Innovative Transportation Solutions award from the Women in Transportation Society). Step by step--or should I say, mile by mile?--we can work towards more eco-friendly mobility habits.

The success of cycling in Portland, as I'm sure Mapes points out, is connected to their green-belt zoning policies, adopted in the early 1970's, which has created a much denser urban fabric. Contrast Columbus' famous land-annexation policy, which sprawled our city out across the scaffold of freeways--a nightmare for walkers, cyclists and public-transit. The next two-decade challenge is to undo that legacy, to condense without leaving dead-zones.

A bikescape, though, is not a walkscape. A bike is transportation technology; it moves us more quickly. Byrne is good on manufacturers efforts to athleticize cycling:

“Pedaling Revolution” is not about mountain biking the Moab sandstone formations in Utah or the network of bucolic paths that link some of the rural Massachusetts colleges; it’s not about racing, Lance Armstrong or what kind of spandex to buy. Nor is it about the various forms of extreme biking that have arisen lately: bike jousting on specially made high-horse bikes, BMX tricks or the arcane world of fixed-gear bikes, or fixies. For decades, Americans have too often seen cycling as a kind of macho extreme sport, which has actually done a lot to damage the cause of winning acceptance for biking as a legitimate form of transportation. If your association with bikes is guys in spandex narrowly missing you on the weekends or YouTube videos of kids flying over ramps on their clown-size bikes, you’re likely to think that bikes are for only the athletic and the risk-prone. Manufacturers in the United States have tended to make bikes that look like the two-wheeled equivalent of Hummers, with fat tires and stocky frames necessitating a hunched-over riding position that is downright unsafe for urban biking and commuting.
Efforts to athleticize walking are goofy (remember Michael Dukakis "power-walking"?), generally step-downs from jogging--running for people with bad knees. That suggests that the rhythmics of walking are congenial rather than competitive, coordinating with others rather than outdoing them. Getting in step, falling in, matching strides--being, overall, responsive rather than assertive--walking has a social dimension that resists being framed in terms of performance-measures or efficiency. With its intimate relation to thinking--to imagination--walking is a practice or habit; it's not a skill to be improved upon by training. It eludes firm conceptualization, which is the province of technology.

A walkscape is thus related to place, the phenomenological primordiality of place. It brings into view that bodily relation, corporal intentionality, including the possibility of straying, of yielding to sights, to events, vistas, memories, and what Heidegger might call "the fourfold." This is a dimension of human action and social life that tends to be hidden beneath the pursuit of efficiency, forgotten in the cultivation of conscious thought. In the kingdom of conscious thought, it recedes into the aesthetic or decorative. An integrated vision of education--of the campus as the site of education--would design an environment to facilitate walkscape, to counterpoint the efficient and deepen our relation to what seems merely decorative.

The Walk continues...

My friend Shannon Gonzalez-Miller let me know about a great "Walk With the Ancients" upcoming in the fall, following the Great Hopewell Road from Chillicothe to the Newark Earthworks--Saturday October 10 through Friday October 16 2009.

The walk will cover 60 miles over 7 days, stopping each evening at ancient earthworks and historic places, with programs each night about Native earthworks, astronomy and Native life. You can walk part of the way, or greet the walkers at Geller Park in Heath on Friday 10/16, for the final mile to the Octagon Earthworks, culminating in a ceremony.

Walk with the Ancients will follow what may have been a major ceremonial road, built by the Hopewell people 2000 years ago, linking the Great Circle Earthworks in Newark to the High Bank Earthworks in Chillicothe. Walkscape Notes 2

The Walkscape Scroll on the Oval was brought to a somewhat earlier than expected close today. At about 3pm the wind picked up, and started to blow the scroll, like a sail on a sandbar, out into the pathway. It promptly tore, scattering at least some of the pages we had clipped to the scroll. Time to roll it on up.

A number of lessons to take from the first Walkscape. An experience is, first of all, an experiment, a trial or essay, from which we learn. Walkscape is an experiment, a net cast widely to see how much we could gather. The idea is simplicity itself--walk, experience, document, contribute--and we pitched it in explicitly inclusive terms, without long art-historical or cultural-theoretical pedigrees (for which see Careri; Solnit; Ingold). The pitch may have been a bit too vague, a bit too everyday, a bit too feel-good, a bit too "it's all good," to have quite the impact we, as organizers, imagined. Surrealists and Situationists surrounded their walks with the cultic ferocity of the avant-garde: small groups, critical agenda, theoretical armor, myths of transgression. In the US, we're more pop (join 'em if you can't beat 'em), laissez-faire populists: the critical gesture often goes unrecognized. "Walking is something people do every day...."

That said, we can identify several different phases or dimensions to the project, each of which may have had a distinct value. There was a show at Hopkins; there was the first wave of publicity, which produced several inquiries; there is this blog (part document, part archive, part observatory, part intersection); there was today's Scroll. Although we received fewer contributions than we might have hoped, we probably raised awareness a little. It was (is) a good idea, even if not as transformative as we might have hoped.

What probably needs a little more stress is the collaborative or contributory aspect of the project. With the distant example of East Asian scroll painting in the background (Solnit cites Hiroshige's Fifty-three views), we imagined the Scroll as a site gathering together a variety of expressive reactions to walking, where distinct visions or insights might produce a mosaic or collage image of the campus-as-walked. Getting out is great; finding a way to document--for the experience to leave a trace--is perhaps no less important. I'd hoped that folks in Art and English might rise to the occasion, recognize the value of adding a trace of their own into a larger picture. That message seems not to have gotten out; despite our "Instructions," it seems that the spectatorial assumption--that Walkscape was an object independent of our involvement--seems to have prevailed.

Another lesson--predictable, but hard to learn--is that displacing habits is harder than it looks ("Poetry is made of words, not of ideas," Mallarmé told Degas, and the same holds of any art-practice). Without the apparatus and authority of Art to move people, the initiative folds back into the usual patterns: the idea might sound appealing, but lines of practice are deeply embedded.

Walking Notes

Lots of people these days walk with earbuds, a soundtrack playing in their heads. It's what the iPod--ever smaller these days--was made for. It's a habit that began, I think, at the gym: on the treadmill; or while running. We take exercise to be a physical activity, where bodily motion is repetitive and essentially separated from the mind; the mind then needs entertainment to go along, needs to be kept occupied while the real work goes on belowstairs.

In other traditions--largely non-Western, these days--there are practices to align body, mind and spirit--walking meditation, for one. Bodily discipline is not radically distinct from the training of the mind and the realization of the sacred. Traditional cosmologies often have an aesthetic component that invites the contemplative engagement of the person (walking the labyrinth may be the closest we still get). Exercise--the kind that needs a soundtrack--takes place in infinitely extended space.

Sitting out on the Oval with the Walkscape Scroll--across from me is Preacher Tom ("I never thought I could be going to hell"); to my left, Students for a Sustainable Campus in veggie costumes, accompanied by a fiddle-and-banjo duo; to my right, a Greek group quarter-pitching for cancer research ("win a beer mug"); somebody selling paintball tickets; an Obama insignia. Meanwhile, all around, it's carnival--bare flesh, frisbee, flirting and high spirits of various kinds.

It's an ironic coincidence that our day here began, just after 10 am, with a collision between two bicycles that left one young man with a concussion. Walking is safer, for sure.

Walking patterned ground


In an earlier post, I referred to the book Patterned Ground, edited by Harrison, Thrift and Pile. Subtitled "Entanglements of Nature and Culture," the book is divided into three sections (Flow, Site, Matter), comprised of brief (3-4 pp) essays by a variety of writers/scholars/artists, on topics ranging from Continents and Virtual Space to Pipes and Wildlife. The term "patterned ground" comes from geology, but the editors extend it into a metaphor for activated relationship to the world--a patterning perceived or imagined that gathers humans into the landscape.

Anyone flying over the continental US will notice the rectilinear inscriptions that make up the Jeffersonian grid-system (lots, townships, etc), and the network of interstates that traverse the countryside and bind the cities together. The local inscriptions--smaller-scaled, more intimate lines of desire--are harder to see from the air, but make up tactical adaptations of/to the prescribed and hardscaped pathways. Still more lightly sketched are idiosyncratic patterns, escape routes, "lines of flight"--these may be invisible from the air, ambiguous from the ground, occasional and improvisatory, momentary openings in the fabric of conventional movement.

Walkscape is an open invitation to stray, to loosen the constraints of habitual motion (goal-oriented, purposive, efficient) and perhaps discover other motives for movement, different ways of aligning body and mind. Patterned Ground suggests that patterning is active and constructive: other orderings emerging into attention, on multiple scales and timescapes. Recovering the full range of motion--physical and mental--could be a project worth pursuing.

South of South Campus

My daily route to work takes me through the area just south of South Campus--a mixed area, mostly off-campus student housing. (A notable sign, hanging from a second-floor balcony: The Brick House, painted on the hood-flap of a car). The rhythms of the quarter are marked by the amount of trash in the streets. It is, apparently, a local custom to toss empty beer cans from the porch onto the sidewalk, in the belief that the homeless can collect them for cash.

I've never taken much notice of the architecture before: there are houses converted to housing, of course, and a lot of generic mid-70's apartment buildings, complete with mansard roofs. I hadn't noticed a recurrent stylistic whim: the number of two-story buildings, brick below and shingled above, a kind of brownstone/Cape Cod hybrid. There are also a number of somewhat older buildings, with quite nice yellow-brick facades over red-brick, many with decorative neo-gothic touches. Then up onto South Campus, with its massed phalanx of apartment blocks, Corbusian concrete tricked out with red-brick corners, apologetically.

The meanings of campus space


Louie Ulman (English) forwarded an article from the Chronicle that speaks to the heart of Walkscape. "The Power of Place on Campus" by Louis Broussard talks about the importance of creating a variety of "sacred spaces" on campus--"among them ritual or ceremonial spaces, processional or exploring spaces, perspective-dominant spaces, and refuge spaces."
A true learning environment provides for both formal instruction and learning that takes place without instruction. Informal learning touches more than just the cerebral — it combines the head, the heart, and the gut. For example, think about reading Thoreau in a sacred space rather than at one's desk in a dorm room. Imagine ad hoc outdoor classrooms designed near an English department's traditional classrooms. Students returning to campus decades later will remember those moments and spaces where knowledge turned into wisdom.
Talk about "the sacred" probably makes some of us nervous; I'd probably rephrase it as "spaces of value," places that mark, enable and intensify a particular kind of emotional or affective state. Mirror Lake is, for me, at least potentially one of those places: beside the library, near the street, in the midst of things but set apart, quiet and motion (the fountain of inspiration) kept in balance.

Broussard makes an obvious but excellent point: that universities are, for many students, sites of crucial emotional and intellectual growth. The space of the campus will be integrated into all sorts of stories of identity-formation--stories of separation (loneliness), discovery (excitement), risk, fear, courage and exultation, and re-affiliation (longing and belonging). Memories are being, intensely, made. How can the campus be cultivated to support and connect these memories into a sense of character?

Learning to Walk

Just got back from the first official Walkscape walk with Prudence Gill. We started (started?) at the center of the Oval, looking at the radiating paths (the one from Hopkins not quite lined up with the one from Hagerty; the one path with a bend in it). First notice: the big ride-on mower making noise on one end of the Oval, the sound of the power plant venting on the other. Walkscape through Soundscapes (jets overhead; helicopters circling the hospital; buses and trucks).

On the Oval today: a tent set up for prayer week, and a booth for Action for AIDS (through World Vision), where for a dollar I got to sign a laminated photo of an AIDS orphan (I signed: Peace).

Then we meandered, letting our attention follow the signs of spring--the trees leafing out, the flowerbeds with a few spikes of tulips, ants building furiously among the mongoose grasses, the vista through to the Physics building, opened up by the disappearance of Brown Hall, the stripes of white caulking on Dulles Hall. The bricks in the sidewalks aren't brick at all, but dyed concrete pavers, inset in sand.

Think about our campus under constant construction, buildings rising and falling, the work of education made visible. Oxford and Cambridge, the exemplary Universities of the Anglo imagination, are built of stone, monuments to the endurance (in all senses) of knowledge. Our University stripped the ivy from its walls--to protect the buildings?--and lost the insulating function, so the buildings are harder to heat and cool.

Somewhere along the way, our walk became an Improving walk, as we started wondering about how the campus looked. Maybe it was as we moved towards RPAC, where the decisions made still seem raw and somewhat arbitrary. Larkins Plaza, for instance, between RPAC and the Aquatic Pavilion, is severe and inhospitable, a blank expanse of concrete sweeping from the library down to the playing fields. Why, Prudence asked, are there no places to sit and read, to lure people from their tasks into reflection? Why no fountain to serve as visual punctuation? Where are the rose-gardens of yesteryear?

The facade of Kunz Hall calls out for a Mondrian treatment, lightening up the monotony of the modernist grids in that corridor. Or why not ivy on the foundation? A Living Wall or Vertical Garden, moving the campus towards green. Rather than segmenting our knowledge-projects (agriculture off to the West, Science to the North), why not weave them in, thread them through the fabric of the university? One of the inspirations for Walkscape is a book called Patterned Ground: Entanglements of nature and culture (2004), in which landscapes are treated as occasions for discerning patterns and rhythms of various sorts.

And then back to Hopkins Hall, where--for the first time--I noticed the homage to FLW detailing, just to the left of the 17th St entrance: a ladder of polished red granite, a strip of colored windows, all but lost under the battered awning.

Walking to Learn

Visitors to our campus are often given what is fondly called the "backwards walk," a guided tour of the university, conducted by a corps of highly skilled OSU Ambassadors. You can see them on sunny mornings, fanning out from Enarson Hall, like birds flocking behind the call of their leader.

Walking backwards may create interesting perspectives, but Walkscape does not offer guided tours. We're looking for un-guided tours, straying off the beaten paths, improvising rather than following the script. Walks that occasion observation, contemplation, rumination, conversation, insight. Alongside the established campus map, there are other, imaginary maps--possible worlds of knowledge, speculative labyrinths, lines of desire.

William Zinsser published a book, back in the eighties, called Writing to Learn. Walkscape could be called "Walking to Learn."

Thoughts on Foot

It's April 24: a holiday for trees. Celebrate Arbor Day by taking a walk through the Chadwick Arboretum, where you'll find a number of mile-long walks as well as a meditative labyrinth. To get there on foot, you'll probably have to cross the Olentangy River: if you look carefully, you should be able to see the turtles.

The Olentangy used to be called the Whetstone River, a more accurate translation of its Native Shawnee name; the Ohio Legislature renamed it Olentangy ("Red-Face-Paint") in the 1830's, borrowing the name from what was likely Big Walnut Creek.

Walkscape OSU is a month-long open invitation to:
  • Explore the campus of Ohio State University (on foot)
  • Document your discoveries, observations, impressions and ideas in a way that makes sense to you. Images, objects found or made, words, sounds, gestures, notations are all welcome.
  • Add your vision to the Walkscape Scroll: On the Oval, May 20 10-4pm. We will be composing a collectively-imagined re-mapping of the campus, a tapestry of ways, paths and sites.


Walkscape is inspired by a book of the same name by Francesco Careri (Barcelona, 2002). Writing as an architectural and urban theorist, Careri examined a series of moments in the history of 20C art when artists turned walking--bodily movement through space--into a critical and creative gesture. Dissatisfied with the conventional and institutional enclosures of art--the frame, the studio, the museum--they took to the streets, looking for new ways to see.

In a line that stretches (circuitously) from the Dadaist "excursions" through Surrealist "deambulation," Situationist "drifting," Richard Long's "A Line Made by Walking" (1967) and the work of OSU's Robert Ladislas Derr, the walking body turns into a means of both creating and resisting meaning: resisting prescribed itineraries, thwarting predictable outcomes, opening new points of access and surprising vistas. What emerges from these bipedal experiments, Careri suggests, are a range of alternative ways of evoking and inhabiting space: practices of pilgrimage, dreamscape, playscape, heterotopia.
